The Bodies of the World Famous Easter Island Heads Have Been Revealed

The world-famous Easter Island is well-known for its sculptures erected on the volcanic island. It is very incredible to see the entire field of roughly 1000 ‘Monoliths’ laid out. A UCLA study team recently organized an expedition to reveal a previously unknown detail: there is more to the Easter Island monoliths than their heads. The crew dug up the remaining sculptures to reveal them.

The Easter Island monoliths were shrouded in mystery, with several theories and stories. They weigh approximately 80 tons and stand around 30 feet tall; they and the island were named ‘Easter’ when the Dutch explorer Roggeveen discovered them on Easter Day in 1722. The UCLA team has already unveiled around 150 of these sculptures for future study. Check out the project’s photo gallery below and let us know what you think!
